Indeed, Sweep It Into Space is a very cool album. The only extra musician used this time with Kurt Vile. Recorded, as usual, at Amherst’s Biquiteen, the sessions for Sweep It Into Space began in the late Autumn of 2019, following a West Coast/ South East tour. They continue to expand their personal universe with Sweep It Into Space, without ever losing their central core. And Sweep It Into Space is a masterpiece of zoned dialling. They have a signature sound as sure as the Stooges or Sonic Youth or Discharge ever did. So while the dips into laid-back territory come perilously close to lethargy on the plinking Take It. ![]() But there are very few moments where you wouldn’t know you were hearing Dinosaur Jr. Sweep It Into Space isn’t without lesser moments, though, even if they’re only short-lived. Lou’s songs here are as elegant as always. As is typical, Lou Barlow writes and sings two of the album’s dozen tunes and Murph’s pure-Flinstonian drumming drives the record like a go cart from Hell. You can hear touches of Vile’s influence on the off-kilter, piano-driven pop of “Take It Back”, as well as in the bittersweet chimes of first single “I Ran Away”, which sounds like a clear (yet distinctly fuzzy) descendent of Jackson Browne’s 1977 classic “Running on Empty”. “That’s the Dino I like.” Five years later, Vile’s formally entered the fray as a co-producer on Sweep It Into Space, a follow-up that further reinforces the notion that the legendary indie rock outfit is the rare band to actually improve since reuniting, as they did upon restoring their original line-up in 2005. In a promo video for Dinosaur Jr.’s 2016 LP Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, singer-songwriter Kurt Vile offered a hearty endorsement as he listened to the album for the very first time: “Riffs, sad lyrics-that’s my Dino,” he said, his daughter seated beside him and his speakers blaring.
